If you have decided to try something new this year- go on a winter holiday and try skiing for the first time in your life, there are certain things you have to pay attention to. It goes the same for the ones with more or less skiing experience. The first and foremost priority in this sport is safety on skis!

When driving a car, your safety as well as the safety of other drivers in traffic is the most important, thus, when skiing there are some valuable guidelines. The first and basic step you have to undertake when you get to the mountain, since you haven`t skied before, is to find a qualified ski instructor. Ski instructor will teach you how to ski properly, how to choose adequate equipment and everything you need to know about safety on skis.

  1. Choose the equipment wisely - when you choose your skis, it is very improtant to choose adequate ones, based on your height and weight. Never use your friends` or parents`skis if they do not fit. What is also important is to adjust your ski bindings, which also depends on your height, weight, age and the skill you possess. If the bindings are well adjusted it is less likely that your legs and knees are hurt if you fall.
  2. Helmet keeps your head safe - perhaps you will notice on the tracks people who do not wear a helmet, but do not follow their example. You should know that the helmet is very important piece of equipment, even the most important one. As much as skiing is fun, this sport can be extremely dangerous if you do not have your helmet on if you fall. Apart from the helmet, always use your goggles, since they help a lot when visibility is low, when it is snowy or foggy.
  3. Ski goggles are also important this piece of equipment is one of the most important. They protect your eyes from the wind, snow, sun and dangerous UV rays, but also from a so-called ski blindness or white blindness, which can be very dangerous. There are many types of goggles and the model you are going to choose depends on your needs. Because the choice is too wide, you can be confused, so bear in mind that due to different light filters there are glasses for sunny and for gloomy weather. It is not recommendable, for your safety, to wear glasses for the sun in gloomy weather and vice versa. Light orange glasses are one of the most agreeable to wear during skiing in almost any weather conditions.
  4. Watch for other people on the track -track - we have already mentioned driving and safety on the road. In the same manner, your safety and other skiers` safety when skiing is also important, thus, following the rules is essential. The rules are very simple and all you have to do is to pay attention to other skiers and to adjust your skiing speed to the other participants on the track and current weather conditions. Special attention should be paid to the youngest participants, because you, being an adult, bears a specific level of responsibility.
  5. Do not neglect weather conditions - skiing speed should always be adjusted to the current weather conditions and potential accidents. If you do not have much experience in skiing, it would be the best if you did not ski at all if the weather conditions are bad, if the visibility is bad or if there is a blizzard or bad weather at that moment. In such situations you should avoid difficult or semi-difficult tracks, meaning black or red tracks.
  6. Ski without fear - easier said than done, but the best possible advice one can give you- is to relax. The sooner you relax and start skiing without fear, the better unforgettable (and safe) experience skiing will become, something you will be happy about every day and every season.
